Obituary for Thomas J. O'Brien

Thomas Joseph O'Brien, 66, of Pittsfield, MA passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 8, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas James and Anne Brielman O'Brien of Lenox.
Tom graduated from Lenox High School and Berkshire Community College. He served as a volunteer firefighter in Lenox, and then began his long career in the building trade working on the grounds at Gould Estate. He worked for many years as a carpenter for James "Jimmy" Lynch Home Building. After working for John Martino at Martino Glass, he subsequently bought the company, which he owned and operated for over 30 years. He proudly grew the business with no plans to ever retire.
Tom was a dedicated Board member the Pittsfield YMCA and Board Treasurer of the Berkshire County Kids' Place. He generously donated his time and resources to many organizations, including the Pittsfield Police Department, Tapestry Health, UNICO, Berkshire Health Systems, and Hillcrest Educational. He was a member of the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and Tyler Street Business Group. He was also a member of the Williams College Faculty Club and the Berkshire Hills Country Club, where he developed his love/hate relationship with golf.
His greatest joys were being with his daughter Andrea and spending time with his many friends. He loved driving his tractor through the woods to spend Saturdays with his buddy Jim.
Affectionately called "MacGyver" by his family, Tom knew how to fix anything. He always enjoyed learning how things worked and generously shared his knowledge with others. He loved skiing, biking, golfing, kayaking, and cooking - he was a self-described food connoisseur.

He leaves behind his wife Linda O'Brien of Pittsfield, children: Andrea O'Brien of Cheshire and Thomas O'Brien Jr. of Lenox; stepchildren Sarah DiNicola and Adam North of Brattleboro, VT; Tim and Julie DiNicola of Dunstable, MA; grandchildren Miles, Sylvia, and Nina; brother Peter O'Brien of Cheshire; countless wonderful friends and his Martino Glass family.
