Obituary for Joseph John Gimlewicz
Joseph John Gimlewicz, 89, of Pittsfield, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at his home.
Born in Pittsfield at home on January 28, 1929, a son of Louis K. and Victoria Mach Gimlewicz, he
was a 1947 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Continuing his education, he graduated
from Bryant College in 1952 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
A Korean War era veteran, Mr. Gimlewicz enlisted with the United States Air Force on July 7, 1947,
served more than a year overseas as a Rawsinsonde Operator at Kindley Field in Bermuda. He
was honorably discharged on May 16, 1950 with the rank of Corporal.
Mr. Gimlewicz was a mortgage banker by profession. He first worked for the former Union Federal Savings and Loan Association and then with First Agricultural National Bank where he retired in 1993. His entire working career was spent in banking in Pittsfield.
He was a regular communicant of St. Agnes Church and was previously a communicant of the former Holy Family Church.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, Mr. Gimlewicz loved to hunt deer primarily with his brother Stanley. As he grew older, he took-up walking and could be seen frequently hiking the Pittsfield State Forest loop road. He also undertook longer ventures including hikes from his home in Pittsfield to both North Adams and Williamstown.
He was also an active member of the VFW and Polish Falcon organizations in Pittsfield and professionally earned a certified real estate appraiser designation. He was an lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, maintained a home garden for many years and was a dedicated husband and father.
Mr. Gimlewicz was very much loved and leaves his wife of 59 years, the former Florence M. Babeu, whom he married October 3, 1959 at Notre Dame church in North Adams, MA.
He is also survived by three sons, Steven M. Gimlewicz of Pittsfield, Paul E. (and Britt) Gimlewicz
of Camden, Maine, and Karl J. (and Cheryl) Gimlewicz of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, Noah, Peter, Michael, Samuel, Matthew, Isaiah & Isabel; and a sister, Agnes S. Ferry, of Spring, Texas.
He was pre-deceased by his brother, Stanley J. Gimlewicz and a sister, Helen M. Lancto.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for Joseph J. Gimlewicz will be held Monday, June 4, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 5, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Dalton celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory (Pastor Emeritus of St. Charles Church). Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
