Obituary for Julia Vlahopoulos

Julia Vlahopoulos, age 81, formerly of Berkshire Town Apartments, died Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home. She was born on October 25, 1934 in Alevrou, Greece, the daughter of the late Spiros and Dimitra Kalavrutinou Grigoropoulos. She was educated in Greece schools.
Mrs. Vlahopoulos was the owner/operator of the Olympic Submarine Shop for twenty-two years. She had previously co-owned the Elm Street Pizza House with her former husband John. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, cooking, and baking for her family. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Known as " Yiayia" to many who loved her, Julia is survived by her son: Dean (and Alana) Vlahopoulos and their children Julia and Nick of Lanesborough; her two daughters: Georgia Vlahopoulos of Pittsfield, and Dimitra Vlahopoulos and her son Ambrose of Naples, FL; her sister: Angel Arlos of Pittsfield; her two brothers: George Grigoropoulos of Alevrou, Greece; and Peter Grigoropoulos of Melbourne, Australia; her sister-in-law: Athena Grigoropoulos of Lenox; and many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her companion: Joseph Cencia; her brother: Christo Grigoropoulos; and her brother-in-law: John Arlos.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Unit 5 Team at Hillcrest Commons and to HospiceCare in the Berkshires.



FUNERAL NOTICE Calling hours will be THURSDAY from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. Funeral services will be FRIDAY, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church with Rev Fr. John G. Maheras, pastor, officiating. Burial will be Saturday at Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
