Obituary for Edward L. "Sparky" Vella Sr.

Edward L. "Sparky" Vella, Sr., 79, of 531 Williams Street, Pittsfield, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016, at Berkshire Medical Center surrounded by his family. Born in Pittsfield on November 11, 1936, the son of Reno L. and Rita Mary Vella, he was a 1954 graduate of St. Joseph Central High School. Edward was known at St. Joseph for his
outstanding football career. He was captain of the football team in 1954 and named All
Berkshire in the Springfield Union newspaper.
He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957, serving 14 months in Germany.
Following in his father's footsteps, Edward started in the construction business working for his father's company, Renau Construction, from 1957 to 1960, at which time he became a
self-employed contractor for over 46 years, specializing in remodeling, several of which included his son, Ed, Jr.
He was named President of the Berkshire County Builders Association, Director of Mass.
Builders Association, Executive Board of the State Builders Association, President of UNICO,
Secretary for district in UNICO, and member and Chairman of Membership in CIAO (Community
Italian American Organization of The Berkshires). He was also on the Board of Directors and Secretary for the East Side Men's Club.
He was a member of the Italian American Club, ITAM Lodge, American Legion, Monday
Morning Quarterback Club, and a Member of the Football Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Through the years, he enjoyed
skiing, bowling, traveling, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and most of all,
supporting his wife Ann's running career which she started at the age of 60.
He leaves two children, Lee Failla of Pittsfield, and Edward Vella, Jr. and his wife Brenda
of Lanesboro. He also leaves six grandchildren, Matthew Gage, Michelle Gage, Courtney Failla,
Jared Vella, Jonathan Vella, and Jessica Rufo.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife and soulmate, Ann, who he was married to for
53 years at the time of her passing in 2010, and his devoted daughter, Susan.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
In honor of his wishes, his interment will be private. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Charles Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
